The party had left him alone in the Music Room again. The party often left him. Mrs. Smith was want to say that he was a 'stick in the mud'. He could not help it if he was not quite as spry as he once was. Life tended to do that to a man.

Marianne entered the music room to see Colonel Brandon standing by the pianoforte. He looked quite somber, and she wondered what could be the matter.

Brandon looked up to see an angel standing in the doorway. She must be Marianne. When he finally found his voice he said, "Hello, I'm Colonel Brandon. You must be Miss Marianne Dashwood, am I right?"

Marianne smiled inwardly. The Colonel!
"I am, sir," she replied, curtsying, "It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance."

Brandon smiled slightly, a sad smile at that. "Not so formal, by half, my dear. I am but a poor old Colonel. No war to keep me busy. Lovely to make your acquaintance. So, I hear you play the pianoforte quite well for a young woman."

"Not quite so poor, from what I hear," Marianne blushed, knowing that she should have held her tongue, "But, yes, I do play the pianoforte. Perhaps we mght play a duet?"

Brandon gave a small smile and chose to ignore that first comment, "No, I do not play nearly so well as I would wish, but I would delight in hearing you play. I hear that you are also quite the songbird." He smiled slowly.

Marianne blushed at the Colonel's comment. "I shall play for you, and sing, if that is what you wish, but only if you do something for me, in return."

"And, what would that be?" Brandon asked calmly.

"That you play a duet with me," Marianne replied with equal frankness, and only the small hint of a smile.

Brandon stood there a moment and debated with himself whether or not he should comply. In the end, he smiled and nodded. "Okay, Miss Marianne. You pick the song."

"Perhaps," Marianne paused, unsure of what piece she would most like to play with the Colonel. "Perhaps we might play Mozart's Sonata in C Major?" 'C' for 'Colonel,' of course.

He raised an eyebrow, smirking slightly at her comment. He then bowed and motioned her to sit on the painoforte bench. "As you wish, ma'am."

Had she said her previous thought out loud? Marianne wondered at his raised eyebrow. "Do you prefer to play the soprano or the bass, Colonel?" she questioned the man.

"Most defininatly not saprano, my dear. Much to showy for an old colonel." He supressed his smile, only allowing the edges of his lips to curl slightly.
